We believe in the deep connection between people, flowers and the land. Our story is one of passion, sustainability and respect for nature, a journey that begins in the soil and blooms into everything we create.

Our Story - from seed to bloom

At Poppy & Fern, we grow, gather and design flowers that reflect the rhythm of the seasons and the beauty of our Byron Bay landscape. Nestled within The Farm, our flower field and studio are filled with the scent of herbs, the hum of bees and the quiet joy that comes from working with the earth.

Every flower has a story, and we honour it — from the seed sown in rich soil to the moment it finds its place in your hands. Our blooms are grown using natural, sustainable methods, and when we can’t grow them ourselves, we source them from nearby flower friends and trusted Australian farms that share our values.

Because to us, it’s never just about the flowers. It’s about the feeling that comes with giving and receiving them — the love, care and energy that flows through each stem. Real flowers carry life within them: their scent, their imperfections, their fleeting beauty. They remind us of what’s real and alive, and they help us send messages that are true, heartfelt and aligned with spirit.

Founded by florist and flower farmer Jess Connor, Poppy & Fern grew from a dream to connect people with real flowers — flowers that are alive with scent, movement and meaning. Over the years, that dream has blossomed into a creative community grounded in respect for the land, love for the craft, and care for every person who walks through our doors.

Today, our work stretches from the flower field to the florist shop, from weddings and workshops to daily bouquets and education. Every creation, big or small, carries the same intention: to celebrate nature, nurture connection and share the quiet magic that flowers bring into our lives.

Because when we grow and give with love, something beautiful always blooms.

Our Values, Mission & Promise

At the heart of Poppy & Fern is a deep respect for nature and the belief that beauty and sustainability can grow side by side. Our work is guided by three simple values that shape everything we do from how we grow our flowers to how we share them with the world. Behind every petal and stem is our small, dedicated team flower farmers, florists and dreamers who love what they do and pour their hearts into every creation

  • Sustainability

We grow and design with the earth in mind, following nature’s lead and working in rhythm with the seasons. Every decision from the seeds we sow to the growers we choose is made with care for the land and the people who nurture it.

Our commitment to sustainability flows through every part of our work in our foam-free, compostable floral designs, in the vessels and packaging we choose, and in the mindful way we run our shop. We promise to tread lightly, give back generously, and create beauty that honours both the planet and the people who call it home.

  • Connection

Flowers are our language of love a way to connect people to the land, to one another, and to life’s most meaningful moments. We believe that giving and receiving real, living flowers carries a message of truth, tenderness and spirit. Our purpose is to nurture that connection through every bloom we grow, every story we share, and every customer we meet.

  • Creativity

Nature is our greatest muse. We celebrate her wildness and imperfection, creating designs that feel organic, abundant and full of life. Every arrangement tells a story — shaped by the seasons, crafted by hand and infused with intention. Our creativity blooms from curiosity, care and the joy we find in working together as a team.

About Jess

Florist, flower farmer, mother, dreamer and do-er — Jess Connor has lived and breathed flowers for most of her life. Her journey began at just fourteen when she started working in a small local florist. From the moment she first held a pair of snips, she knew she’d found her place. Flowers became her world, a way to create beauty, express emotion and stay connected to the natural rhythms that guide us all.

By twenty-one, Jess had opened her first florist, a traditional brick and mortar store in Lismore, Northern NSW. It quickly became a much-loved part of the community, known for its abundant, heartfelt designs and welcoming atmosphere. The shop was recognised multiple years in a row with local awards including Lismore Business of the Year and People’s Choice Business, celebrating Jess’s creativity, dedication and deep connection to her customers.

When she became a mum, Jess shifted her focus, creating wedding and event florals from a home studio while her babies were babies. Those years deepened her love for meaningful design and strengthened her dream of growing flowers in a gentler, more sustainable way.

Guided by her love of the land, Jess went on to study horticulture and permaculture, following her desire to understand plants and ecosystems on a deeper level and to grow in a way that gives back. That passion eventually led her to The Farm Byron Bay, where she joined the community just over seven years ago, a place where everything she loved finally came together. Surrounded by soil, sunlight and connection, Poppy & Fern was born, a living expression of Jess’s vision to grow, design and teach with heart.

Inside the flower shop at The Farm, visitors find more than just blooms. It is a world of botanicals, filled with handmade products, garden-grown herbs and gifts that celebrate nature’s beauty in all its forms. Every corner of the space reflects Jess’s philosophy: natural, simple, earthy and made with love.

For Jess, flowers are more than her craft; they are her language and her spiritual connection to the world. She feels deeply attuned to the energy of each bloom, often describing it as a higher, unseen rhythm that runs through her work. Even those who don’t believe in the “woo woo” often say they can feel something extra in her flowers — a quiet warmth, a soulfulness that can’t quite be explained but is instantly recognised.

Jess has also shared her knowledge as a teacher at the Byron Bay Community College and through private workshops, inspiring others to connect with flowers in meaningful, sustainable ways. Her dream has always been to open a larger flower school, a place where people can learn the art and ethics of floristry from the ground up, surrounded by the very blooms they’ll one day design with.

Today, Jess continues to live her lifelong dream, growing flowers under the Byron Bay sun, designing wild, heartfelt arrangements and teaching others to do the same. She still feels that same sense of wonder every time a seedling pushes through the soil or when the flower field glows at dusk.

Because for Jess, it has never been just about the flowers. It is about energy, intention and love — and the beauty that blooms when we grow in harmony with nature.
